The Old Markethall

Farmers of the TRH PIAC MARKT

For us, Saturday food markets were already at the very beginning of our operation within the Old market an absolute priority. We cared about getting back the food into this wonderful space, and with it, above all, its producers from the wider region. Already in ancient times, farmers came to the market hall and the square in front of it with their goods from beyond the banks of the Danube and the Moravia, and you usually spoke in Slovak, German and Hungarian at the market. Today it is no different, which is symbolically reflected in its very name, Trh Piac Markt (note: Piac = market in Hungarian, Markt = market in German)

We have been running the Saturday food MARKET PIAC MARKT, practically since we started beginning, relying on the CODE, an important document that contains the rules operating food markets, a unified market standard defined by us. It was also designed for the purpose of better orientation and strengthening of trust on the part of the party customers that they will get what the food markets declare - fresh, high quality food directly from farmers and producers.

However, the Code also anchors important principles of our operation and at the same time presents our value setting. Among the basic principles of our operation of the food market include, above all, careful selection of sellers, quality, guaranteed (mainly local, regional, maximum domestic) origin of food sold, a high sales culture and, last but not least, a fair approach to the sellers themselves. We value a strong international movement Slow Food  , which advocates for the protection of biodiversity, for improving awareness of the system that controls food production, for the preservation of culinary heritage and traditions, which is why we follow the basic criterion of "good, clean and a fair product". The food on offer at our markets tastes good, is local, fresh, seasonal, or has been made from such ingredients and benefits our health. They were grown or produced in a sustainable way, respecting the environment, animals and local communities. In the prices at which they are offered, artisanal production is adequately valued and fair conditions are applied for both the farmer and the producer, as well as the consumer.

Within the market, we have several categories of sellers: the so-called yard sales (smaller family farms and small vegetable and fruit growers), self-employed farmers and family farms, family manufactories (bakers, butchers, confectioners, winemakers...) and specialized food importers that do not come from our culture, but have become part of our days (e.g. coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, or exotic fruits). At imported products, we prefer identical product quality to those regional (i.e. farm products, artisanal food), products in BIO quality or with the Fair Trade label, or recommended by representatives of the Slow Food movement in the country of origin of the given product.

The majority of the offer is made up of goods that thematically correspond to the nature of the markets and are based on Slovak traditions, especially on the traditions of growing crops, breeding livestock and production of food products. We try to intervene in the selection of sellers as well as the offer itself to such an extent that the offer is balanced, creates a fair environment for the sellers themselves and adequately responds to the current demand. It is important to us that the offer is as wide as possible, so that the visitor can find mainly products of daily consumption, vegetables and fruits that are offered by the current season. We regularly visit the farms and operations of our sellers and thus guarantee the quality and seasonality of the goods offered.

Our main goal is to support regional primary producers (from category gardeners, farmers farming on smaller areas to family farms and factories that process and value high-quality Slovak raw materials) but at the same time, the supply of citizens with high-quality fresh agricultural crops and foodstuffs of mostly local, regional or Slovak origin. We care about creating a social space that serves as a selling point and at the same time contributes to the formation of the community, its education in the field of food quality and bringing the urban population closer to the countryside.
