The Old Markethall

A number of small solutions form a meaningful whole.

Thinking ecologically means thinking about details. At Old Markethall, we try to reflect responsible thinking in every activity. That's why we don't use disposable cups, we use transport on cargo bikes, and we pay active attention to such, at first glance, obvious thing as waste separation. Take a look with us at these small solutions that create a meaningful whole in the Old Market.

A number of small solutions form a meaningful whole.

Recups is a system of backup cups that we use not only in our establishments, but also at all events organized by us. This system allows us to avoid disposable dishes. Thanks to the introduction of Recups, we have significantly reduced the total volume of waste produced in the building.

Another small solution is the active use of cargo bikes for the supply or delivery of products. The old market is a large building with a lot of businesses, which naturally causes busy traffic in its vicinity. We are aware that road transport is a major polluter of the air, so we are trying to reduce it both through a number of restrictions and through the search for alternatives. We have already written about the reduction in the number of garbage trucks thanks to the composting station. Another measure is the active use of cargo bikes for the delivery of products from the Old Market. On the one hand, it is beer from a brewery, and on the other hand, it is soda water from a soda shop. These products are a regular passenger on our transport bikes. Occasionally, however, in cooperation with cycle couriers from Švihaj šuhaj, we also transport larger loads. For example, many plants traveled to the Oasis in this way, including a fifty-year-old two-meter-high Chinese rose.

The last mentioned measure is the separation stations that we use during the regular street food festival Streetfoodpark, during the Saturday markets Trh-Piac-Markt, but also during some events. In the separation station, we collect municipal waste, plastic, paper, glass, compostable waste, kitchen waste and used oil. In addition, the station is staffed by trained personnel to ensure that everything ends up in the correct bin.

Energetic efectivity

In 2022, Europe experienced an energy crisis that significantly affected the functioning of the Old Market. At the same time, the end of the service life of our gas boiler was approaching. That's why we decided to proceed with a major energy revision of the building. The goal was to set a sustainable operation for the next decades. Read more

Farm to fork

15. November 2023
During the markets, visitors have the opportunity to experience our Canteen. What makes it special? The dishes that are cooked here are prepared from ingredients from our market vendors, so the ingredients go from the farm directly to the plate. This type of gastronomy is called Farm to Fork.
